Is Sharon not covered by social security and her employer

I very much doubt if Sharon wanted to pay social security-here the employer pays 2/3 and the employee 1/3 (roughly)-so she is not covered

You can choose to pay or not pay social secutity, does that not make you an illegal worker and put the employee in a serious position?

Coleen owns Perk Sharon works there and is doing sushi place.

We saw Cindy (who also works at perk) and she is still collecting money to help Sharon through this rough patch. Definitely a good cause if you have some spare $$.

I am a little confused, Sharon owns Mermaid’s Sushi & Martini Bar at Fido’s , works for Coleen who owns Island Perk and people want us to donate money to help her out, when is was her choice not to pay social security.

Social Security only pays medical expenses if it's a work injury. Sickness benefits are not enough to survive on.I don't know if she contributes to Social Security or not.
We help each other out here in San Pedro.

Hold on

Sharon had quit working for Island Perk-she really only works for Fido's part time -Sushi opens 4 nights a week-social security does not cover hospital bills for non work related accidents-they will pay wages-but it is not very much as bonuses etc. are where she makes most of her money.
I tend to agree that one should expect that foreigners that come here should have the "nouse" to have a "rainy day fund" but some live hand to mouth, and this is definitely the case with Sharon.
Cindy should be applauded for helping her out,in what is definitely Sharon's time of need, and I hope that when she gets better she does not forget the help that she has been given. All monies collected,so far, have gone to buying groceries-nothing has gone to anything else.
Hopefully she will be back at work within a few weeks.

I own an Inn bar and pizzeria and almost everyone pays by credit card -I would be out of business if I screwed people-sending a wire transfer costs over 60usd -so unless you are going to make a substantial donation it would be mad to send to my bank account- the other way is to send it to Peter Lawrence Western Union San Pedro Belize

As a matter of fact this subject has become our business when we were informed that Cindy was collecting money for Sharon. Sharon is a friend and has been for years and we sent our best wishes as soon as we had heard. When Loansum informed us we sent money and I broke my golden rule about giving money (TIME YES MONEY NO). Peter has guaranteed were the money will go and that is good enough for us. At the time I did not regret sending the money in Sharon hour of need, but this board has now informed us Sharon had no "rainy day fund", no social security, no medical insurance and was drunk on a boat at the time of the accident. I hope other people will learn from Sharon choice’s.

KHMH (Belize City hospital) has exceedingly low rates. I had a friend there for 10 days to be monitored after a heart attack - the bill was $300. Another friend was in for 2 days, treated for burns - $75. Another had emergency surgery after a stomach ulcer perforated - $1,200 Bz - he was in for 2 weeks.

I agree that inplub brings up very valid points about health insurance and a rainy day fund - but perhaps he could have done it in a more gentle manner, at a time when it wasn't such a stark reality for one of our popular islanders.

And drinking and boating do not mix... and sometimes we need reminders of how instantly our lives can change.

Get well soon Sharon - godspeed.

Tell me how anyone working in the service industry on the Island can accumulate a "rainy day fund"....maybe for ONE rainy day! Also I wonder how many boarders participating in this thread have had one too many while boating......looks like the pot is calling the kettle black!

Loansum

for goodness sake people who come here have a choice and when they are from a first world country they should be able to support themselves-foreigners should not depend on the goodwill of others.
In the case of Sharon she had a drainage hole in her side and she started smoking immediately and drinking-
I have contributed to her wellbeing but you cannot fix stupid
