I think you still have to have a work permit even for volunteer status, but I'll bet there is a great need for mental health workers, especially psychiatrists. I'm really not trying to joke here; genuine mental illness is a serious matter to those suffering and their families.

Hi -
Thanks for replying-
I will probably arrive in Belize City first and then not sure. I am looking for something simple but safe enough to take my laptop. Not too touristy.

Hi Catdance-
it seems like there is a great need in general. I am not a psychiatrist but a PhD in psychology- so I am hoping that my experience in psychotherapy can help me to find something- teaching at the U would be also OK. Just getting my foot in the door....

Hi Tim-
Here I am- ! I have gotten no results from e-mailing Belize possibilities about work- the trick (as in most places) is getting your foot in the door. I will do calling next.
I am a clinician and academic ready for a change and would like it to be Belize. I know help is needed that's why i chose it, aside from its beauty- Volunteering is an option-

I think you can just buy a work permit for around $1500.00 US, but maybe someone can clarify that.

to clarify - you don't "just buy" work permits - you apply, you qualify or you don't, and if you are approved you pay a fee.

any other way is illegal, and hopefuly unsuccessful as well
